ISO 9001: The International Standard for Quality Management Systems

ISO 9001:2015 is the internationally recognised standard for Quality Management Systems. It provides a framework for managing your processes effectively, delivering consistent quality and improving customer satisfaction.

The standard follows a Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. You identify what your business needs to deliver, put clear processes and controls in place, check they are working and continually improve. It follows the same structure as ISO 45001 (health and safety) and ISO 14001 (environmental), making integration straightforward for businesses already working with other ISO standards.

Why Organisations Pursue ISO 9001 Certification

The reasons vary, but they usually fall into a few categories:

  • Tender requirements: Large clients, public sector contracts and supply chains often require or favour ISO 9001 certification.

  • Demonstrating quality: Certification provides external validation that your organisation has structured processes in place to consistently deliver quality products or services.

  • Improving efficiency: ISO 9001 helps identify duplicated effort, process weaknesses and opportunities to improve the way your business operates.

  • Customer confidence: Certification shows customers that quality is managed properly and that your systems have been independently assessed.

  • Integration: If you already hold ISO 45001 or ISO 14001, adding ISO 9001 creates an integrated management system that simplifies your processes.

Plan Do Check Act

Our Approach to ISO 9001 Support

Option 1:
ISO 9001 Gap Analysis

Best for: Organisations wanting to understand their current position against ISO 9001 requirements without committing to full implementation support.

A gap analysis is exactly what it sounds like: we assess your current arrangements against the ISO 9001 standard and identify what is already in place and what still needs to be developed. You get a clear picture of:

  • What you already have in place that meets the standard.

  • Where your gaps are and what needs to be developed.

  • Practical recommendations for closing those gaps.

  • A realistic timeline and resource estimate for achieving certification.

What's Included:

  • On-site assessment at your premises.

  • Review of existing documentation, policies and procedures.

  • Interviews with key personnel.

  • Detailed written report with findings and recommendations.

  • Follow-up call to discuss the findings.

This option gives you everything you need to either implement the gaps yourself or engage us for ongoing support.

Option 2:
Full Implementation and Ongoing Support

Best for: Organisations wanting hands-on guidance through the entire certification journey and ongoing support to maintain their management system.

This is the partnership approach. We work alongside your team from gap analysis through to successful certification and beyond. You get a dedicated consultant who understands your business, your processes and your goals.

  • Development of a tailored implementation plan with realistic timelines.

Phase 2: System Development

Quality Assurance

How Long Does Certification Take?

It depends on where you are starting from and how much internal resource you can commit. As a general guide:

  • If you already have structured processes in place: 3–6 months to certification, depending on the size and complexity of your organisation.

  • If you are starting from scratch: 6–12+ months is more realistic, depending on how quickly the system can be developed and embedded.

We always recommend allowing enough time to properly implement the system before seeking certification.

Business Management Systems

Integrating with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001

ISO 9001 uses the same high-level structure as ISO 45001 (health and safety) and ISO 14001 (environmental). If you already hold one or both of these certifications, adding ISO 9001 creates an Integrated Management System (IMS).

Benefits of integration:

  • Less duplication. Shared elements such as document control, internal audits, management review and corrective actions are managed once, not separately.

  • Simpler system. One management system rather than multiple standalone systems. Easier to maintain and easier for your team to understand.

  • Natural alignment. Quality, environmental and safety issues often overlap. An integrated approach helps you manage them together.
