International Standard for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management Systems
A bad system will beat a good person every time. - W. Edwards Deming

ISO 45001: The International Standard for Occupational Health and Safety
ISO 45001:2018 is the internationally recognised standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It provides a framework to proactively manage workplace risks, prevent incidents and create safer working environments for your team. The standard follows a Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. You identify your risks, put controls in place, check they're working and continuously improve. It follows the same structure as ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environmental).
Why Organisations Pursue ISO 45001 Certification
The reasons vary, but they usually fall into a few categories:

-
Contract requirements: Large contractors and public sector tenders increasingly require or favour ISO 45001 certification from their supply chain.

-
Demonstrating commitment: Certification provides external validation that your organisation takes health and safety seriously.

-
Reducing risk: A structured management system helps identify hazards before they cause harm, reducing incidents, claims and associated costs.

-
Legal compliance: ISO 45001 provides a framework for meeting your legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations.

-
Integration: If you already hold ISO 9001 or ISO 14001, adding ISO 45001 creates an integrated management system that simplifies your processes.

Our Approach to ISO 45001 Support
Option 1:
ISO 45001 Gap Analysis
Best for: Organisations wanting to understand their current position against ISO 45001 requirements without committing to full implementation support.
A gap analysis is exactly what it sounds like: we assess your current health and safety arrangements against the ISO 45001 standard and identify what's missing. You get a clear picture of:
-
What you already have in place that meets the standard.
-
Where your gaps are and what needs to be developed.
-
Practical recommendations for closing those gaps.
-
A realistic timeline and resource estimate for achieving certification.

What's Included:
-
On-site assessment at your premises.
-
Review of existing documentation, policies and procedures.
-
Interviews with key personnel.
-
Detailed written report with findings and recommendations.
-
Follow-up call to discuss the findings.

This option gives you everything you need to either implement the gaps yourself or engage us for ongoing support.
Option 2:
Full Implementation and Ongoing Support
Best for: Organisations wanting hands-on guidance through the entire certification journey and ongoing support to maintain their management system.
This is the partnership approach. We work alongside your team from gap analysis through to successful certification and beyond. You get a dedicated consultant who knows your business, your risks and your people.
What's Included:
Phase 1: Gap Analysis and Planning
-
Comprehensive gap analysis (see option 1)
-
Development of a tailored implementation plan with realistic timelines.
Phase 2: System Development
-
Development or revision of your OH&S policy and objectives.
-
Creation of required documented information (procedures, forms, registers, risk assessments).
Phase 3: Implementation Support
-
Staff awareness training on ISO 45001 and the management system.
-
Support embedding the system into your day-to-day operations.
Phase 4: Audit Preparation
-
Internal audit(s) of your management system.
-
Management review facilitation.
-
Pre-certification readiness assessment.
-
On-site support during your UKAS certification assessment.
Phase 5: Ongoing Maintenance (Optional)
-
Regular internal audits.
-
Management review support.
-
Continual improvement guidance.
-
Support during surveillance audits.

How Long Does Certification Take?
It depends on where you're starting from and how much resource you can commit. As a general guide:
-
If you already have structured H&S arrangements: 3-6 months to certification depending on organisation size and complexity 9-18 months.
-
If you're starting from scratch: We always recommend allowing enough time to properly embed the system before seeking certification. A paper system that doesn't reflect reality will be spotted by auditors and won't deliver the benefits you're looking for.

Integrating with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
ISO 45001 uses the same high-level structure as ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environmental). If you already hold one or both of these certifications, adding ISO 45001 creates an Integrated Management System (IMS).
Benefits of integration:
-
Less duplication. Shared elements like document control, internal audits, management review and corrective actions are managed once, not three times.
-
Simpler system. One management system rather than three separate ones. Easier to maintain and easier for your team to understand.
-
Natural alignment. Quality, environmental and safety issues often overlap. An integrated approach helps you manage them together.
